Alfred Cheney V was born 19 February, 1937 in Kinston, North Carolina. He was the first born son to Alfred IV and Gladys Wise Cheney. He passed away 22 May, 2025. He was 88 years old.
He graduated from Contentnea High School where he excelled in sports and social life.
He married Wanda Bridges in 1964. They had one son, Alfred Cheney VI--Freddy. Wanda passed away in 2006.
Al served in the US Navy for 4 years. Then he became an officer with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for 7 years.
He worked for National Cash Register until 1992. He had the privilege of working in Australia for 3 months.
Al loved bowling. While working away from his family, he would bowl 5 nights a week. He has even bowled a few 300 games!
Al enjoyed participating in the Senior Olympics. He entered 16 events and medaled in 13 of them. He became National Archery Champion.
He enjoyed basketball, especially Duke. Go Blue Devils!
Al was an avid bicyclist. At age 73 he rode 750 miles in 16 days across the state of North Carolina.
On July 6, 2020, Al married Margaret Hiatt Hein. They had dated in high school and re-connected later in life after losing spouses. They enjoyed nearly 5 happy years together.
He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was endowed on his 85th birthday. He served in the Sunday School, the Elder’s Quorum, and as a greeter. He loved his Savior Jesus Christ.
Al was preceded in death by his wife Wanda, his sister Gladys, and his parents.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; his son Freddy (Britan); grandsons Jaxen and Finn; brothers, Martin (Linda); Ben (Sheryl); and nieces and nephews.
Al was loved by so many, including Margaret’s children and grandchildren. God be with you Al, until we meet again!
Services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2025. A visitation will start at 2:00 p.m. with the Funeral Service to follow at 3:00 p.m.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Highland Cemetery.
