Carmen Lynette Steed, 75, passed away on Monday, July 21 at her home in Casper, Wyoming. She was born February 2nd, 1950 in Chamberlain, South Dakota to parents Helen D. (Andresen) and Donald R. Young. The family moved to New Castle, Wyoming, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1968. Carmen moved to Casper, Wyoming and worked for UPS for almost 20 years. She suffered from a heart condition that made life a little more difficult, but she did not let that keep her from enjoying her time hiking and “rock hounding” the waters of Wiggins Fork, or camping and ice fishing with her family. Her love of the outdoors was only matched by her fear of the dark, and, of course, the bears that were lurking there.
Carmen was a committee member for the Bighorn chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and a Jakes coordinator where, every September, she would educate thousands of youths who participated in the NWTF Jakes Field Days during the Wyoming Game and Fish Hunting and Fishing Expo. She also developed an exhibit that she would travel the school system with to educate the children about wild turkeys. Other organizations she volunteered for include the Wyoming Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army. She also spent many cold nights helping Stuff the Van in the Walmart parking lot during the holiday season.
Carmen is survived by her sons, Trevor (Heather) Phillips; Troy Phillips; Trent (Jovon) Phillips; and Russell Steed: Grandchildren, Kyler Phillips; Lacey Phillips; and Tori (Terrance Tveit) Phillips: Great grandchild, Weston Phillips: and extended family members in Wyoming, South Dakota and Chicago areas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tom Young. At her request, a service will not be held. The family will be taking her for one last trip to Wiggins Fork next summer for her final resting place. In her honor, please be sure to over Stuff the Van this winter.
