Obituary

Charles “Chuck” Potter passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on July 26, 2026.

Chuck was born on October 29, 1937, in Casper, Wyoming, to Charles Ralph Potter and Thelma May Lewellen. He married the love of his life, Judith “Judy” Potter, and together they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage—years marked by devotion, partnership, and deep family roots.

A dedicated public servant, Chuck joined the Wyoming Army National Guard in November 1956. His leadership and commitment were evident from the beginning. He rose to Sergeant First Class by 1968 and, at age 31, earned an age waiver to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS), graduating in 1969. After commissioning, Chuck served as the Property Book and Supply Officer for a self propelled howitzer battalion for 16 years, ensuring readiness, accountability, and excellence in every detail.

In 1985, he transitioned to Higher Headquarters as a management auditor before becoming the Data Processing Chief for the Wyoming National Guard—roles that reflected both his discipline and his talent for mastering new technologies. Chuck retired in July 1995 as a Commissioned Warrant Officer 4 (CW4), concluding nearly 39 years of exemplary service to his state and country. His military career was a defining part of his life, shaping his character and earning the respect of all who served alongside him.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Thelma, and his brother, Gary.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his children, Donald Potter and his wife Chris of Casper, WY, Cindy Larson and her husband Jerry of Cypress, TX, and Patrick Potter and his wife Darlena of Cheyenne, WY; and his siblings, James, David, Raymond, Beulah, and Alan. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren—Melissa, John, Chelsie, Sam, Judith, Andrew, and Paul—and seven great grandchildren who carry forward his legacy of love, creativity, and service.

Remembering Chuck… Chuck was a man who expressed love through motion—through the easy grace of a golf swing, the quiet precision of a careful measurement, the sawdust that dusted his shirt like a badge of honor, and the stained glass colors that warmed the morning light. His life was crafted by his own hands—steady, creative, and full of purpose. He shaped wood, glass, and steel into beauty, and shaped his family with that same gentle, unwavering devotion.

He spoke most clearly through action: a deck imagined and built, a kitchen reborn under his touch, a stained glass church offered to someone he loved, a bar crafted for the golfers at Paradise Valley, angel ornaments to lift the spirits for cancer patients. His love lived in the things he made, in the hours he gave, and in the care he wove into every detail.

Chuck loved deeply—his wife, his family, the sprawling Potter clan, and the community they helped to shape. Golf was his joy, his rhythm, his way of connecting. Cherry pie was his delight. And breakfast with family became his anchor, a simple ritual that kept him close to the people he cherished and the stories that bound them together.

His 39 years of service with the Wyoming National Guard were a source of immense pride and a defining thread woven through his character. Chuck served with quiet professionalism and unwavering commitment—supporting his state, guiding soldiers, and carrying the values of discipline, loyalty, and duty into every corner of his life. The Guard shaped him, and in turn, he shaped those who served beside him, leaving behind a legacy of steadiness and honor.

Chuck was always learning, always creating, always moving toward the next project, the next idea, the next way to give something of himself. Whether woodworking, redesigning, building, carving with his CNC machine, or crafting stained glass that caught the Wyoming sun, he poured his spirit into every piece—each one a reflection of his curiosity, his skill, and his generous heart.

His legacy lives on in the art he made, the spaces he built, and the lives he touched with his love and creative energy. Chuck built things. But more than that, he built a life worth remembering—one shaped by devotion, illuminated by creativity, and carried forward in the hands and hearts of those he loved.
