Duane Alvia Shofstall, age 90, passed away in Douglas, Wyoming on September 14, 2026, after a fall at his home in Casper, just seven weeks after celebrating his milestone 90th birthday with his family.
Duane was born on July 27, 1936, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, and grew up in Redmond, Oregon. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Japan where he worked on airplanes. This experience sparked a lifelong interest in engineering, and he spent his entire civilian career working as a skilled Electrical Designer.
An avid outdoorsman with an adventurous spirit, Duane’s true passion was fly fishing. He spent countless hours tying his own intricate flies and fishing pristine waters across the United States, Alaska and Canada. Alaska held a special place in his heart; in his early career, he brought home fresh King Crab from his northern trips, and in later years, he and his wife, Mary, shared unforgettable adventures catching massive salmon there. He also loved metal detecting and gold panning, camping in the Big Horn Mountains with his brown CJ. Chasing the thrill of discovery throughout Canada and Alaska. Upon his retirement in the late ‘90’s, Duane and Mary fully embraced the nomad lifestyle, moving into their fifth-wheel trailer and traveling continually for 18 adventurous years. Camp hosting in Oregon and California, traveling to Nova Scotia and then on to Florida to watch the space shuttle lift off.
Beyond his many talents and adventures, Duane was known for his wicked sense of humor. He brought laughter to everyone around him, leaving behind sharp wit that his daughters will proudly carry on and will most definitely miss.
Duane is survived by his first wife of 18 years, Rosalie, and their three daughters: Julie Blanchard and her husband Charlie of Rogue River, Oregon; Kelli Shofstall of Austin, Texas; and Lynn Griffin of Casper, Wyoming. He is also survived by his beloved daughter, Twani Norton and her husband Tim of Doniphan, Missouri, whom he helped raise during his 45-year marriage to Mary; five loving grandchildren: Sonorah Shofstall-Duty of Tyler, Texas; Christian Carr of Austin, Texas; Jeremy Mascarenas of Casper, Wyoming; and Fallyn Harnden and her husband Nick of Casper, Wyoming, Rozealin “Rozie” Frasier and her husband Colby of Nortonville, Kentucky; his four cherished great-grandchildren, Kyler Alexander, Madison Claire, Shawn Hardy Levi and Zachary Keith; Duane is also survived by a dear friend Beryl "Bea" Sugden of Bellevue, Washington along with his Sister-In-Law Betty Shofstall of Chelan, Washington, and his three nephews, Mike Shofstall, Doug Shofstall, and Jim Shofstall, and his two constant Shih Tzu companions Buddy and Sparky.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Alvia and Irene Shofstall; his brother, Bob Shofstall; and his beloved wife, Mary Shofstall, who passed away four years before him. He leaves behind a legacy of adventure, dedication, and a deep love for the open road and quiet waters. Our hearts, and the hearts of all who knew him, are richer and we will miss him tremendously. Free, unencumbered, and at peace, may you now soar among the stars with those who went before you.
Rest Easy, Dad. We got this.
