George Michaels was born on February 11, 1938 in Drama, Greece. He passed away peacefully at home in Casper surrounded by family at the age of 88 on March 11, 2026.
At the age of seventeen George immigrated to the United States. He first settled in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he was sponsored by his Thea Chrisa. It was there that he began building the foundation for the life he would create in America.
At eighteen George joined the United States Marine Corps and served this country. After completing his service, he returned to Sioux Falls, where he met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Hegdahl. In 1959 the two were married in Casper, Wyoming.
In 1965 George proudly became a United States Citizen. Later that same year George and Ann founded Michaels Fence & Supply in Casper and later, Sioux Falls. Through hard work, determination, and meticulous craftsmanship they built a respected business.
George loved fishing at Alcova Lake, playing poker with friends, attending tennis tournaments, visiting Las Vegas to relax and play blackjack, and sharing coffee and conversation with friends. George and Ann enjoyed traveling, particularly to Greece. He had an innate ability to arrive in the middle of a family or friend’s project, take over and do it his way.
George was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, and a sister. He is survived by his sister Doukeni Xikes; his loving wife Ann; his children Chrisa DeGraeve (Bill), Ana Zook (Troy), and Mike Michaels (Debbie); nine grandchildren; Andreas, Gabriel, Ruby, Eve, Leo, Melissa, Kendra, Chriana, and George; and seven great‑grandchildren.
George’s life was defined by courage, hard work, and devotion to family. From a young immigrant arriving in America to a proud Marine and successful businessman, he built a life of integrity and purpose. His legacy lives on in the family he loved and the community he helped build.
George would want you to know, “it’s been a good life up til now”.
Visitation will be held at 6 pm Friday March 20, followed by Trisagion at 7 pm; both at Bustards Funeral Home. The Orthodox funeral will be held at 10 am Saturday March 21 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Committal with military honors will follow in Highland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in George’s memory may go to Coins For Alzheimer’s Research Trust at cartfund.org.
