Guilford “Gil” Lee Maxon, a true Wyoming cowboy and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy as wide and warm as the Wyoming sky.
Gil is survived by his devoted wife, Hilda Maxon; and their six children: Steven, Kenny, Johnny, Rob, Michele, and Andrea; along with many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A proud veteran, Gil served his country in the Army National Guard, carrying the discipline and dedication of that service throughout his life. He was a man who believed in hard work, community, and passing on what you know — values he lived out every day for over fifty years as the owner of a multi-generational autobody shop in Mills, Wyoming.
Gil was the original “Pop in the Shop.” His open-door policy was simple: bring the parts, and he’d teach you to fix it. Generations of young people walked through his shop doors and left with knowledge, confidence, and a lifelong skill — a testament to a man who gave generously of his time and talent.
A member of the Elks Lodge for over twenty years, Gil believed in giving back to his community both inside and outside the shop. He later brought that same work ethic and dedication to his role as a consultant at Water Works, where he spent over a decade working alongside his best friend, Jerry — a fitting final chapter for a man who always valued loyalty and good company.
When he wasn’t working, Gil was most at home in the great outdoors. Whether racing snowmobiles, hunting and fishing the Wyoming wilderness, or chasing the deep blue waters of Mexico on a deep-sea fishing trip, he lived with the spirit of adventure that defined him.
Gil Maxon was a good man, a good friend, and a cornerstone of his community. He will be deeply missed and long remembered. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. at Bustard & Jacoby Funeral Home- 600 E Cy ave. followed by a celebration of life at the Elk’s Lodge in Casper.
