Iris C. Harnagel

What do you find when you “Google” Iris C Harnagel? One would quickly discover a lifetime of dedication to the profession of pharmacy and a legacy of service that touched countless lives. Her contributions to healthcare, her community, and the advancement of pharmacy are reflected in the many honors and recognitions she received throughout her distinguished career.

Iris C. (Wallace) Harnagel was born on March 31, 1937, in Horace, Kansas. During hard times for her biological family, she was lovingly adopted by Dale and Retha Hubbs. Iris became family to the Hubbs siblings as soon as she walked in the door, and one by one as they were born over the years. They all remained deeply connected throughout their lives.

Dale Hubbs, a pharmacist in Tribune, Kansas, inspired Iris’s passion for pharmacy at an early age. Following in his footsteps, she pursued higher education at the University of Colorado, Dale’s alma mater (previously Boulder University), where she completed the requirements necessary to become a pharmacist. During her college years, Dale and Retha moved to Lovell, Wyoming, to open a pharmacy there.

After earning her degree, Iris chose to remain close to her family and accepted a position as a pharmacist at a hospital in Casper, Wyoming. At a time when female pharmacists—particularly those serving in hospital settings—were uncommon in Wyoming, Iris established herself as a respected professional in her field. It was during this period that she met the love of her life, Floyd Harnagel, on a blind date.

Floyd and Iris were married on September 4, 1965, in Casper, WY. They were “Floyd and Iris” or “Iris and Floyd”. Their names were very rarely said separately. They were a team that went on to work together for 35 years making a store that was a staple for the community of Casper, WY, Bi-Rite Sporting Goods and Pharmacy.

Iris became known for her professional excellence, compassion, and commitment to serving others. In 1992 Iris was awarded the Bowman Award by the Wyoming Pharmacy Association. In 1993 Iris was the President of the Wyoming Pharmacy Association and was also awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Award for civic leadership in their community. In 2000 Iris served the store as Chief Pharmacist. Bi-Rite offered all the things a person could need from groceries to sporting goods, and of course the pharmacy with a drive up to serve the people that were not able to walk in.

Iris and Floyd shared a love of friendship, travel, history, and music. Together they celebrated 48 years of marriage before Floyd's passing in 2014. His loss was profound, but Iris continued to live with grace, strength, and determination, remaining an inspiration to family, friends, and all who knew her.

Iris and Floyd were also passionate advocates for the future of pharmacy. As Pinnacle Society donors to the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy, they helped support the education and development of future generations of pharmacists. The Harnagels generosity extended to also support improving their community.

Iris leaves behind her beloved siblings: Dennis Hubbs (Kathy Hennek) of Saratoga, Wyoming; Penny (Albert) Twomey of Wright, Wyoming; Kim (Georgia) Hubbs of California; and Kody (Rick) Rogers of Kansas, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Iris will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her profession, her devotion to family, her generosity toward others, and the lasting impact she made on her community. Her legacy of service, leadership, and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Bustard's Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
