Kerstin Nichole Kern

Casper

Kerstin Nichole Kern left this world far too soon when she passed peacefully in her sleep on June 25, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming, leaving behind a family, countless friends, and a community whose lives will never be the same.

Some people quietly pass through this world.

Kerstin did exactly the opposite.

She stood just 4'7", although if you asked her driver's license, it insisted she was 4'8". She may have stretched the truth just a little, but no measurement could ever capture someone whose personality filled every room she entered.

Born on December 4, 1988, in Valentine, NE, Kerstin spent her childhood in Alliance and Gering, NE, and Pierre, SD. No matter where life took her, she had a way of collecting people. Every trip to the grocery store turned into a dozen conversations. Every restaurant meant running into someone she knew. She never met a stranger, and it didn't take long before you weren't just someone she knew. You were family. She had a rare gift for making people feel like they belonged.

She was many things throughout her life: daughter, sister, cousin, friend, CNA, home health aide, waitress, bartender, manager, daycare owner. But her favorite title was simply Mom.

If there was one thing everyone knew about Kerstin, it was how fiercely she loved. But nowhere was that love more evident than in the way she loved her children. Rylan and Gavin were the center of her world. She poured her heart into being their mom, whether she was crafting projects with her own hands, traveling to their games and activities, cheering from the sidelines, or proudly telling anyone who would listen about her kids.

Kerstin was a caretaker through and through. Whether she was caring for someone in their home, serving customers, running a daycare, or helping a friend who needed her, caring for people wasn't just what she did. It was who she was. She had an unwavering sense of justice. She stood up for the underdog, defended people who couldn't defend themselves, and had a heart that naturally gravitated toward anyone who was hurting or overlooked.

She was sarcastic, hilarious, fearless, compassionate, wonderfully stubborn, brutally honest, and unapologetically herself. She had a laugh that made everyone else laugh, a sense of humor that could brighten even the hardest day, and a way of making ordinary moments unforgettable.

She loved tacos, sushi, thrift shopping, listening to AC/DC with her dad, road trips, dancing, shooting pool, collecting Starbucks cups, dinosaurs, crafting, trying her luck on the slot machines, and cheering on Rylan and Gavin from the sidelines. Chuck Taylors in every color were part of her signature look. She treasured time with family and friends, adored her dogs, and never passed up an opportunity to make another memory.

Her dad wasn't just her father, he was her best friend. They talked every day about everything and nothing, shared countless laughs, funny videos, and life's hardest moments together. They trusted each other completely, loved each other fiercely, and shared a friendship that was every bit as special as the bond between father and daughter.

If you knew Kerstin, you have a story.

You remember the laugh.

The sarcasm.

The adventure.

The hug.

The conversation that lasted far longer than it should have because she genuinely cared how you were doing.

She collected people everywhere she went, and somehow every one of them walked away feeling like they were one of her favorites.

She was impossible to ignore, impossible to replace, and impossible not to love.

The last several days have been a testament to the extraordinary life she lived. The overwhelming outpouring of love, stories, laughter, tears, and support from family, friends, coworkers, teammates, neighbors, and complete strangers has shown just how deeply Kerstin touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.

If love alone could have kept her here, she would have lived forever.

Though her story ended far sooner than anyone ever imagined, the love she gave, the laughter she shared, and the lives she changed will continue to ripple through this world for generations. That is the legacy she leaves behind.

Kerstin is survived by her children, Rylan and Gavin; her father, Arlen Kern; her mother, Christina Merry; her brothers, Andrew Kern and Matthew Merry; her sister, Heather Merry; her beloved grandparents, Roger and Debi Bakkehaug; her cousin, Shari Walton, who was like a second mother to her; countless aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, dear friends who became family; and her beloved dogs, Abby, Dave, and Shady Doo.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Arthur and Johanna, and Arlene Kern; her maternal grandparents, Dale and Asenith Dyess; her cousin Zach Walton; her dear friend, Denise; and her beloved dog, George.

She was a tiny little firecracker with a heart far bigger than her 4'7" frame. She loved fiercely, laughed loudly, stood up for what she believed in, and made people feel seen, valued, and loved. The world feels quieter without her in it, but everyone fortunate enough to know her carries a little piece of her forward.

A viewing and celebration of Kerstin's life will be held on Sat., July 11, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Alliance Eagles Club in Alliance, NE, with a reception to follow.

A Casper, WY celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 6:30 P.M. at The Office Bar & Grill.

For those who wish to honor Kerstin's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Bustard & Jacoby Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses, or through the family's GoFundMe to help support her children and family during this difficult time.

So the next time you hear "Thrift Shop" playing a little too loud...

Eat a taco.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Stand up for someone who needs it.

Stop when you see a rainbow.

Love your people fiercely.

And remember the tiny woman whose heart was somehow bigger than the whole sky.
