Luke was born on July 25, 1957, in Sutherland, NE, to Harold (Jack) and Frances (Frani) McConnell. He passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025. Luke spent his early years in the Sandhills on a ranch, where he developed a deep love for country life. In fourth grade, his family relocated to a small place outside Lewellen, NE, where he and his brother, Jay, attended a country school until eighth grade. Luke then attended Garden County High School in Oshkosh, NE, competing in football, wrestling, shot put, and rodeo. He later pursued college in Torrington, WY, where he continued his passion for rodeo.
After college, Luke began his career in the construction industry and eventually became a successful business owner. Never one to follow the ordinary path, he later pursued another dream and started a Christmas tree farm. Both of his ventures flourished, a testament to his determination and grit.
In 1990, Luke married Micki O’Connor, and together they welcomed two children, Beau and Sage. Though they divorced in 2012, Luke remained a committed father. He enjoyed watching his children play sports, taking them camping and fishing, and proudly sharing their accomplishments with his close friends and family. While he may not have always expressed his emotions openly, those who knew him recognized the deep pride he had in the adults they had become.
After retiring from his businesses, Luke moved to Lusk, WY, where he met Carrie Marie Olson. They shared many happy years together, embracing the peace and simplicity of country living. Luke and Carrie enjoyed gardening, fishing, and watching football together. Carrie remained next to Luke’s side until the end.
Luke worked hard and played hard. He was an active community member, lending a hand at the Garden County Fair, organizing bull riding events, helping at the Eagles Club, and mentoring young bull riders. Though he could sometimes seem tough, he had a heart of gold and a soft spot for children—always ready to spoil them with treats. Luke loved to barbecue, smoke meats, and host gatherings for friends, especially his rodeo companions. He even tried his hand at bullfighting before realizing his true passion was riding bulls. Camping and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, and he delighted in sharing those experiences with anyone willing to join him. Generous and loyal, Luke was the kind of friend who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Luke is survived by his children, Beau (Emma) McConnell of Imperial, NE, and Sage McConnell of North Platte, NE; his partner, Carrie Olson; his brother, Jay McConnell; and his nephews, John (Joker) McConnell and Brennen Hopping. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren—Daxton, Lennox, Juno, and Ellis—who carry his legacy forward.
A gathering of friends will take place to remember and share stories of Luke at 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 20, at the Eagles Club in Oshkosh, NE.
