Marjorie Ann Metzler was born on September 6, 1936, in Minatare, Nebraska, to Lillian and Joseph Svoboda. She was the youngest of six children, joining siblings Marie, Dorothy, Richard, Edwin, and Leonard.
After the passing of her father when Marjorie was just 13 months old, the family moved to Schuyler, Nebraska, where they lived on her Uncle Otto's farm. Marge attended the rural elementary school and graduated from Schuyler High School.
Marge was always the center of attention, whether at school or among family and friends. She treasured the love and support of her mother, Uncle Otto, and her siblings. While in high school, she met the love of her life, Charles "Chuck" Metzler. During Chuck's service in the United States Navy, Marge and her best friend, Patti Higgins, made the most of their high school years, cheering at school events and creating lifelong memories together.
When Chuck returned home, they married and began building their family in Nebraska with the birth of their son, Terrence. After several transfers for Chuck's career, they eventually settled in Ohio, where their daughter, Yalonda, completed their family.
Marge found her calling working in retail, beginning with Top Value and Gold Circle before finding her true home at J C Penney. Whether working in customer service or sales, she earned the respect of management, coworkers, and customers alike through her work ethic, compassion, and unwavering integrity.
Her J C Penney Store 1902 family held a special place in her heart. To many, she was simply known as "Mother Marge." Everyone confided in her, knowing their trust would never be broken. She offered honest advice, whether it was wanted or not, always motivated by genuine love and concern. To Marge, her coworkers were never just coworkers, they were family.
She took great pride in watching those she mentored grow within the company. Nothing made her happier than hearing about someone from her store being promoted, transferred to Texas for corporate opportunities (Tom), or becoming a store manager (Linda & Carolyn). She celebrated each success as though it were her own. One of her favorite stories was about a young man who began by pumping gas and eventually became a Vice President at the corporate level. This was Tom and she was able to have a surprise visit with him in 2023.
When Terrence and Yalonda moved to Wyoming, Marge and Chuck decided to follow so they could be closer to their children and grandson, Nicholas Metzler. Although she deeply missed her Ohio friends, she transferred to the JCPenney store in Casper, where she once again built lifelong friendships, especially with her beloved "Bobbsey Twin," Jeannie, and of course the younger girls, Precious and Nikki to name a few.
Marge was truly a social butterfly. She loved her people. Retirement brought new adventures, including treasured trips to Maui with Yalonda and Chuck, where she never met a stranger and formed lasting friendships-Frannie & Lou Baby, Pinkie & Steve O to name a few. On several trips, Jeannie joined them, creating countless memories filled with laughter that everyone around them enjoyed.
Marge is survived by her son, Terrence Metzler, and grandson, Nicholas Metzler; her daughter, Yalonda and her husband, Don Kaufman; her sister-in-law, Maria Svoboda Adams and her husband Kelly; nieces and nephews: Hazel Adams, Michael, Meaghen, Sienna, Charlie, and Milo Svoboda; Travis, Shawna, and Reid Svoboda; her "Precious" Nebraska nieces; nephews Jim, Bob, and Mike "the Beast"; Kelly Thorson and Leanne Glowaski her Wyoming and Ohio hairstylists whom she considered family; Mia Diiorio—known affectionately as "Bacon, Bacon, Bacon"; her Luanne Drive Neighbors; and her faithful furry companions, Tucker and Mood Dude.
