Matthew T. Matney

Matthew Taylor Matney, 38, was born January 7, 1988 and passed away on August 29, 2026. Matthew grew up primarily in Casper and was residing here when he passed. He went to school in both Casper and Cheyenne and received his GED while attending Trapper Creek Job Corps. He was very proud of the contribution he made while assisting firefighting crews during his time at Job Corps. He worked as a welder for a short time before a back injury prevented him from continuing in that field. His greatest skill though, by far, was his ability to make friends. Within hours of moving into a new home as a child, Matthew would come running into the house with a new “best friend” every time. He had a big personality and was never shy about asking for things that he wanted. He was a wheeler-dealer and a master negotiator, never stopping until he managed to talk you into whatever he wanted. His friends refer to him as a sweet guy, kind, generous and funny. He would give you the shirt off his back or a place to stay if you had nowhere to go. He loved video games, music, art, reading and writing fiction stories, drawing, animals, ramen noodles and hot sauce, lots and lots of hot sauce.

Those who knew him well though also knew his struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse. The combination of these two things unfortunately took a tremendous toll on the last several years of his life. Alcoholism can sadly transform the person you know into a person you barely recognize and unfortunately this was the case with Matthew. During his periods of sobriety, however, we always saw his true heart and longing for love and connection. He will be remembered by the people who loved him as the guy that always tried to make people laugh and the person who never wanted to give up on anything or anybody. He spoke of gratitude a lot and we are grateful he was in our lives.

Matthew is survived by his grandmother and guardian angel on earth, Sharon Hubbard, his parents, Amanda and Everett Aguilar, his brother, Everett and sisters, Alexa and Gabby along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members and friends that loved him.

Matthew tried over and over to get sober, to mend his relationships and get his life back on track. He once said, “A healthy mind is a healthy life”. He would want anyone struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues to stay strong, get help and never give up. On July 20, 2024 Matthew posted a picture of himself on Facebook standing in front of a poster of Batman and under the picture it read, “To the Future. Bigger. Better. Greater.” Rest in Peace dear Matthew, Rest in Peace.

Our family has chosen to honor Matthew privately. If you knew Matthew, we ask that you honor his memory by continuing to love and support the people in your life who may be struggling no matter the cause. Mend any relationships that need mending and never give up hope for a bigger, better, greater future.
