Melville "Mel" Irving Dunn III, 84, of Casper, WY, passed away after a short illness on February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Mel was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Mary Thornton Clark and Melville Irving Dunn, II.
He attended one of the oldest traditional military prep schools in the United States, Kentucky Military Institute, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.
After college, Mel became a skilled defense and trial attorney, practicing law in Miami and later in Casper, WY. He married Patricia "Patty" Ann Stapleton in 1972 and they lived in Miami for nearly a decade until relocating to Casper. Mel and Patty were married for 45 years until Patty's passing in 2017.
The couple had two children, Michele and Melanie Dunn, and loved to travel as a family. Mel was an accomplished pilot, having earned his private pilot's license at 18 years of age, and often flew the family to vacation spots and family reunions.
When not practicing law or flying, Mel loved to play the guitar. He played all kinds of music, but especially loved Jazz and American singer/songwriters. He was known for often entertaining family and friends with his musical abilities.
Mel was a member of the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association, the Wyoming Civil Air Patrol and volunteered with his wife Patty, and their therapy dog Bentley, at Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions.
He will be remembered fondly for his quiet but strong nature, his keen sense of justice and his generosity.
Remaining to cherish Mel's memory are his children, Melanie Dunn of Casper, WY, and Michele Mitchum of Laramie, WY, and his grandchildren, Christopher Laughrey and Max and Mason Holmes.
Preceding Mel in death are his spouse, Patty Dunn, his sister, Mary Dunn, and his parents, Melville I. Dunn II and Mary Thornton Clark.
Memorial donations in Mel's memory may be directed to Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions.
