Roland was born in Chestfield, IL to Gilbert and Alberta Van Camp. After graduating high school, Roland joined the US Airforce and was stationed in Cheyenne, WY where he met his beautiful wife, Roberta. After being discharged from the service, they decided to move to Washington State to be closer to her family. They bought property just outside of Redmond and he built a log cabin house where they raised three children. He took a job with Boeing, where he remained until taking early retirement so could travel more. In 2007 they moved to Casper to be closer to their youngest grandchildren. He loved to travel and build houses, his wife, Roberta never had a completed house because something was always being worked on or added to.
