Stephen LaMar Atkinson, lovingly known as Steve, passed away, surrounded by his three daughters on June 2, 2026, at the age of 83 in Casper, Wyoming.
Steve was born on October 4, 1942, in Driggs, Idaho, to Walter and Bernice Atkinson. Growing up alongside four brothers and two sisters, and with his favorite cousin Richard often by his side, Steve cherished family from an early age. As a student at Teton High School, he earned the nickname "Sharp Shooter Steve" for his talent on the basketball court, a title that followed him long after the final buzzer.
Steve spent much of his life helping build the infrastructure of Wyoming. As you travel across the state, chances are you've crossed one of the many bridges he helped construct—a lasting testament to his skill, dedication, and hard work.
While working in Wheatland, Wyoming, Steve's life changed when a pretty young gal named Jo caught his eye as he raced around town in his hot rod. The two were married on September 19, 1964, beginning a loving partnership that would span decades. Together, they built a life centered on family and raised three beautiful daughters, who were the pride and joy of his life.
Steve found happiness in the outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or gathered around a campfire, he was most at home in nature. Many were lucky to share his camp breakfasts—fried Idaho potatoes, eggs, and, if the fishing had been good, a fresh brook trout or two. In his later years, he took great pride in tending his garden and sharing its bounty with friends, neighbors, and family. He also enjoyed spending time on his front porch, where he could often be seen sitting and waving to those who passed by.
More than anything, Steve will be remembered for the love he showed to those around him. He had a strong work ethic, a quick wit, a mischievous grin, and a contagious chuckle. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his brothers, swapping stories, sharing laughter, and creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Steve is survived by his brothers, Leroy (Charlene), Don (Kristi), and Keith (Jackie), as well as his daughters, grandchildren, nephews and nieces, extended family, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and unwavering love.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jo; his parents, Walter and Bernice; his brother, Bert; and his sisters, Ardella and Helen.
A graveside service will be held on June 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Wheatland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice in Steve's memory.
Though he will be deeply missed, Steve's legacy lives on in the family he loved, the friendships he cherished, and the countless lives he touched
