William Betz “Bill” Potts, 80, of Casper, Wyoming passed away on March 15, 2026 at home following a lengthy illness.
Bill was born in Cody, Wyoming to William and Betty Potts on November 15, 1945. When he was in second grade, his parents moved him and his three sisters, Marie, Patty, and Connie to Casper. He went to high school at Natrona County High School where he excelled at basketball and track, specifically pole vault. He graduated from NCHS in 1964.
In 1967, Bill was drafted into the United States Army and served his country in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he began his long career in the oil and gas industry. Bill was known in the oil and gas industry from Texas to Alaska as an expert fisherman, meaning he would fish out of the oil wells tools and anything else that didn’t belong in them. In 1970, Bill married Barbara Sage of Casper and they had one son also named Bill. When this marriage ended in divorce, Bill met and married the love of his life Kay Potts. Through this marriage gained Bill a new step-son named Jesse. Bill and Kay remained married until her passing in November of 2024.
Bill’s passion was working on and restoring old Chevrolet vehicles. He was a member of the West Side Boys car club and went around the region showing the cars and trucks he restored. He met many friends through this expensive hobby who stayed in touch with him to the very end. More than anything, Bill enjoyed spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his sister, Marie Peppra of St. George, Utah, his son, Bill Cubin (Jessica) of Casper, his step-son, Jess Ellis (Tracey) of Lakewood, Colorado, and four grandchildren; Reagan, Will, Jake and Taylor. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Alice Kay Potts, his mom Betty, his dad Bill, and his sisters Connie and Patty.
Bill will be laid to rest next to his wife, Kay, at Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville, Wyoming.
Memorial donations can be made in Bill’s honor to St. Anthony’s Tri-parish Catholic Schools in Casper, Wyoming, as well as Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington, Wyoming.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held later this year.
