William Everett Powell

June 1, 1936 — May 5, 2023

Casper

William “Bill” Powell passed away on May 5th, 2023, at the age of 86.  Bill was born in Coleman, Texas to Everett and Wilma Powell.  He graduated from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biology.  Bill taught high school biology before enlisting in the Army where he attended Ranger Paratrooper school, OCS school, and served in the 82nd Airborne.

In 1963 he married Louella Glenney, and they went on to have 4 daughters.  In 1971 they had an opportunity to move to Anchorage, Alaska and in 1982 moved to Casper, Wyoming.  After leaving the Army, Bill worked the rest of his career for the Government as a civil servant, starting as a recreation director for military bases and moving to the Department of the Interior working with grants for land reclamation projects.

All through his life, Bill was very passionate about hunting, fishing, and sports.  Bill played football, basketball, baseball, and golf in college and went on to coach American Legion baseball in Texas and Wyoming.  In Alaska he was a high school and college basketball referee and a softball umpire.  Wherever Bill went, he actively hunted and fished and enjoyed all the outdoors had to offer- often accompanied by his beloved bird dogs.  He also rekindled his love of golf after moving to Wyoming and, once he retired, could be found on the golf course 3 mornings a week with his usual foursome.  Bill also enjoyed spending time with and teaching his grandkids about hunting, fishing, and playing sports, as well as catching up on his favorite westerns and sports events on TV.  Bill was his grandkid’s biggest fan, both on and off the field.

Bill is predeceased by his former wife Louella Powell (Glenney), parents Everett and Wilma Powell, sister Carolyn Wells (Powell), and son-in-law Tom Cashman.  He is survived by daughter Julia Powell [Colin Johnson], daughter Carla Cashman, daughter Susan Powell [Joe Krygier], daughter Amy Crawford [Dennis], and grandchildren Thomas Cashman, Cody Crawford, and Samantha Crawford. He is also survived by his brother Michael Powell (Shirley).
