Continuing her education, Barbara earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Central Connecticut State College before joining the Women’s Army Corp in 1967.  After years of service to her country, and having received the National Defense Service Medal, Barbara honorably separated from the Army as a Captain in 1970 and married her college sweetheart, John A. Barbara worked as a teacher and substitute teacher, and enjoyed giving back to the community by volunteering with the Special Olympics and at the New Hampshire Farm Museum. She was especially proud of her service to her country, continuing to serve her fellow Veterans in the Honor Guard. In her personal time, Barbara was a talented artist and enjoyed oil painting, textile arts, stained glass work, and jewelry making.
